Formed after the state of Vermont took over the properties of the abandoned Rutland Railroad, the VTR main line runs down the western side of Vermont from Burlington through Rutland and North Bennington (branch to Bennington) to the New York State line at White Creek.
CPR reaches the VTR by way of interchange with its subsidiary Clarendon & Pittsford from Whitehall, NY; all marketing for both roads is handled as a single entity, although all routing must include the CLP when traffic originates or terminates on the VTR.
Principal commodites handled are ground limestone (dry and slurry), petroleum products and grain products; CPR also purchases ballast stone from VTR-served customers. The VTR recently acquired a majority interest in the Green Mountain Railroad and has begun marketing under the name Vermont Rail System (VRS).
