Railway Association of Canada Environmental Excellence Award – 2008
For the second consecutive year, Canadian Pacific's industry-leading environmental efforts were recognized by the Railway Association of Canada (RAC). RAC's evaluation committee gave CP the highest score in the freight category of its annual awards competition – this time for an innovative land exchange in Alberta.
Under the terms of a cooperative agreement between CP and the Government of Alberta, the railway acquired and gave the province 1,774 acres of strategically situated land in exchange for 797 acres with less environmental value to support track expansion in Alberta's Industrial Heartland.
The deal provides CP with new business marketing opportunities, through the development of rail infrastructure in the booming industrial area northeast of Edmonton. In return Alberta's parks and protected areas will benefit from the additional adjacent land parcels assembled by the railway.
The newly-acquired land allows the province to expand the boundaries of Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park, Beaverhill Lake Heritage Rangeland Natural Area, Miquelon Lake Provincial Park and Game Bird Sanctuary and Ministik Lake Game Bird Sanctuary. These expansions will help protect and enhance wildlife habitat diversity.
CP was also honoured with the RAC environmental award in both 2005, for the development of our coal re-spray facility near Salmon Arm, B.C., and in 2007, for our outstanding efforts to control vegetation around crossings through the integrated vegetation management program.
CP 2008 Environmental Excellence Award Winner
For more than a decade, CP has remained steadfast in our commitment to encourage green initiatives on multiple levels within our organization. We encourage and support employees by leading by example and recognizing the best of the best every year with a contest that celebrates those that go above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to working green.
This year's Environmental Excellence Award winner, Karine Desjardins from Montreal's St. Luc Car Department, focused her efforts on overall reductions throughout her shop. Fluorescent lamps, paint and oil are among the products for which Karine implemented sustainable recycling programs. Additionally, vehicle idling was another issue that Karine tackled. Being smart about fuel consumption reduces our environmental impacts and improves productivity.
"I'm proud to work for an organization that supports its employees and the environment through recognition awards. This acknowledgment inspires me to do even more for the environment," explained Desjardins. "While recycling paper and cardboard is important in an office setting, being in a shop presents different challenges."
Karine's attitude towards green living is inline with our efforts to minimize consumption and waste across our property and is also contagious. "I want others to feel the same way about the environment as I do, but this is not something that you can force on people. People care for the environment simply cause it's the right thing to do for the earth and for future generations."
