CPR Empress steam train arrives in Moose Jaw to commemorate a century-long partnership
The historic CPR Empress steam train arrives today in Moose Jaw to help commemorate the city's 100th birthday and mark a century-long partnership between Canadian Pacific Railway and the City of Moose Jaw.
The arrival of the vintage steam train from Regina, with more than 100 Moose Jaw residents and dignitaries on board, will kick off an evening-long celebration of the ties between the city and Canada's first transcontinental railway. CPR will also announce completion of a joint project between the railway, Rocom Management and other local businesses and individuals to return the CPR station clock tower's 81-year-old clock to working condition.
"Moose Jaw holds special memories for the railroad and for those who have worked for CPR. We feel privileged that we could be a part of the city's centennial celebrations and look forward to a continued partnership with the City of Moose Jaw," says Paul Clark, CPR's Vice-President of Communications and Public Affairs.
Canadian Pacific Railway first laid tracks three miles east of the city in September 1882. Shortly after building track through what is now downtown Moose Jaw, the first train station was built (the current station is the third building on the property and was erected in 1920). Since then, CPR has been a major contributor to the area's economy. Today, Moose Jaw is CPR's Saskatchewan headquarters and home to approximately 470 employees.
CPR Service Area Managers Scott Sutherland and Jim Woodrow, will also present the City with an original brass station clock to mark the centennial.
Activities are due to start with the arrival of the CPR Empress at approximately 5:30 p.m. next to the CPR station on Manitoba Ave. and will move to River and Main Streets for 6 p.m.
The CPR Empress Hudson-type steam locomotive is the roving ambassador for The CPR Empress breakfast for Learning Tour that began in Medicine Hat on May 24 and has visited several communities across the prairies and Ontario.
